The Border Terrier was bred in the seventeenth century in the border areas between England and Scotland to help cull foxes. Its ancestry is common with many other terriers of that region.

 

The name was established in 1880, before then it was called the Reedwater or Coquetdale Terrier.

 

The Border Terrier Club was established in 1921 and the breed is now popular throughout the world, both as a working terrier and as a family pet.
