The Shih-Tzu means “lion dog”.

 

The breed is one of the most loved animals in China because of its association with Buddhism.

 

The Shih-Tzu was a pet favoured during the Ming Dynasty and highly prized by the Chinese Royal Family.

 

The Shih-Tzu is both a gentle lapdog and companion. It loves to play and is affectionate to its family, his purpose in life is to love and be loved.

 

Despite its small size it requires daily exercise. It can meet these requirements with vigorous indoor games or short walks on a lead. It should never be expected to live outside. Its luxurious coat needs constant brushing and puppies should accept grooming from an early age. 

 

World War II interrupted the breeds development in England, but it survived and then thrived in the 1950’s and 1960’s.
